Monkey Think, Monkey Do by Chuck Palahniuk
This summer a young man pulled me aside in a bookstore and said he loved how in "Fight Club" I wrote about waiters tainting food.

He asked me to sign a book and said he worked in a five-star restaurant where they monkey with celebrity food all the
    time.

"Margaret Thatcher," he said, "has eaten my sperm."

He held up one hand, fingers spread, and said, "At least five times."

Writing that book, I knew a movie projectionist who collected single frames from porno movies and made them into slides.

When I talked to people about cutting these frames into G-rated family movies, one friend said, "Don't. People will read
that, and they'll start doing it."

Later, when they were shooting the Fight Club movie, some Hollywood big names told me the book hit home because they, themselves, had spliced porno into movies as angry teenage projectionists.

People told me about blowing their noses into hamburgers.

They told me about changing the bottles of hair dye from box to box in the drug store, blonde into black et cetera, and coming back to see angry wild-dyed people screaming at the store manager.

This was the decade of transgressional novels, starting early with American Psycho and continuing with Trainspotting and Fight Club. These were novels about bored bad boys who'd try anything to feel alive.

Everything people told me, I could sell.

On every book tour, people told me how each time they sat in the emergency exit row on an airplane, the whole flight was a struggle not to pop that door open.

The air sucked out of the plane, the oxygen masks falling, the screaming chaos and "Mayday, Mayday!" emergency landing, it was all so clear.

The door, so begging to be opened.

The Danish philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard, defines dread as the knowledge of what you must do to prove you're free, even if it will destroy you.

His example is Adam in the Garden of Eden, happy and content until God shows him the Tree of Knowledge and says, "Don't eat this."

Now, Adam is no longer free.

Thee is one rule he can break, he must break to prove his freedom, even if it destroys him. Kierkegaard says the moment we are forbidden to do something, we will do it. It is inevitable.

    Monkey think, monkey do.

According to Kierkegaard, the person who allows the law to control his life, who says the possible isn't possible just because it's illegal, is leading the inauthentic
    life.

In Portland, Oregon, where I live, someone is filling tennis balls with hundreds of match heads and taping them shut.

They leave the balls on the street for anyone to find, and any kick or throw will make them explode. So far, a man's lost a foot, a dog, its head.

Now the graffiti taggers are using acid glass-etching creams to write on shop and car windows.

At Tigard High School, a teenage boy takes his shit and wipes it around the walls of the men's bathrooms.

The school knows him only as "The Una-Pooper."

Nobody's supposed to talk about him because they're afraid of copycats.

As Kierkegaard would say, every time we see what's possible, we make it happen.

We make it inevitable. Until Stephen King wrote about high school losers killing their peer groups, school shootings were unknown.

But did Carrie and Rage make it inevitable?

Millions of us paid money to watch the Empire State Building destroyed in Independence Day.

Now the Department of Defense has enrolled the best Hollywood creative people to brainstorm terrorist scenarios, including director David Fincher, the man who made the Century City skyline collapse in Fight Club.

We want to know every way we might be attacked.

    So we can be prepared.

Because of Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, you can't mail a package without going to a post office clerk. Because of people dropping bowling balls onto freeways, we have fences enclosing highway overpasses.

    All of this, reactive.

As if we can protect ourselves against everything.

This summer the man convicted of killing my father said, hey, the state could give him the death penalty, but he and his white supremacist friends had built and buried several anthrax bombs around Spokane, Washington. If the state killed him,
someday a backhoe would rupture a buried bomb and tens of thousands would die.

What's coming is a million new reasons not to live your life.

You can deny your possibility to success and blame it on something else.

You can fight against everything-Margaret Thatcher, property owners, the urge to open that door mid-flight, God... everything you pretend keeps you down.

You can live Kierkegaard's inauthentic life.

Or you can make what Kierkegaard called your Leap of Faith, where you stop living as a reaction and start living as a force for what you say should be.

What's coming is a million new reasons to go ahead.

What's going out is the cathartic transgressional novel, now that we have someone to hate more than each other.

    ...and then some...

Well it has been too long, so I guess its catch up time.

Let me start by singing the praises of my new favorite restaurant/pub, Ri Ra's Irish Pub! Special Thanks goes out to my friend Justin to recommend this fine establishment. I have already been there twice and plan on going back with everyone I know.

Ri Ra's not only serves up a delicious bloody steak but they are also home of the Guinness BBQ Burger, which I will highly recommend. To top it all of I suggest a pint of Harp or a nice smooth Guinness (both on tap)…as most of you know I love my Guinness!

Check out this bad ass pub the next time you're in Evansville

     Ri Ra Evansville, LLC
    701-B NW Riverside Drive
    Evansville, IN 47708
    Tel: 812.426.0000

    or on MySpace @ http://www.myspace.com/riraevansville

The next order of business is Resident Evil: Extinction. Well I have always heard that if you can't say anything nice; don't say anything at all…so I guess I have nothing to say about this horrible movie and its horrible CGI.

Meanwhile …30 Days of Night is just around the corner!

On a personal note Lily and I just got a family picture taken it is soooo f'n cute! You'll just have to see it. Speaking of fatherhood; I never thought I would ever hear myself say "Just pull up your pants and put the golf club down."

So let's see what is next…hmmm… oh yeah tattoos! I have recently gone from 37 tattoos to an amazing 45 and still going! Thanks and kudos goes out to my friends and inkslingers Chris, Bridget, and Damion.

At this point I have added a truly Bad Ass Frankenstein (on my forearm), a Guinness harp (on my left hand), Gir (on my right arm), my daughter's name in Theban (on my neck), a tiny tic-tac-toe game (also on my right arm), a bomb (right arm), 7 deadly ants (on my left foot), and the VAST logo (on my right hand/knuckles) and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon! I still have uninked flesh and a mind full of ideas.

I hope to have pictures up soon.

Now for the bad news; I had originally hoped to have my short story "Thrust", in an upcoming issue of Apex Horror Digest, but they have since opted not to publish the story. While this does make me unhappy I know my career is far from over. I still plan on sending more stories and I know this is only the beginning.

Today I plan to finish outlining my new idea for a novel and finally get started on "Gutted", a story influenced by a great person's photo and a trip to the creepy place it was taken. That's all you get for now. So, stay tuned for more on that as it develops.

     * Random Quick Notes: Congrats to my longtime friends Kelly who just got married…I finally bought a dart board, I love it …Love is a Dog from Hell…My Birthday and Halloween are coming up very soon...Java Monster is freakin' cool...Go! Go! Mighty Manchester United...I was recently turned on to a great band (Placebo). They are definitely a required taste but if you like good music give them a listen, you'll love them, I know I do!

Okay that's all folks (unless I'm forgetting something…I know I am.)

Dead Girls and the Dirty Ground!!!
    Hello Boys and Ghouls,

Guess what I've been up to?!?

Bridget and Suzi - FX by Drew - Photo by J. Travis Grundon

Don't worry they're just fine. We didn't really kill them but the halloween spirit is in the air. Leaves are starting to turn and fall, Michael Myers is in theatres and stores are breaking out the ghastly good stuff!

Oh, Yes it is getting to be my favorite time of year and I can't wait until October! To get off on the right foot I took my daughter to the Knick Knackery costume shop, so we check out all the new Halloween wear. Lily had no problem finding what she wanted. Within' a matter of moments we both could have filled a shopping cart.

We eneded up spending some cash and Lily got her Sailor Moon costume, so evil beware! I, on the other hand, settled for more little things like a voodoo doll and some neat gloves. Make no mistake we will be heading back soon.

In other horror happenings; don't forget to be on the look out for Topps Hollywood Zombies! Trading Cards. That's right, Trading cards are not dead...they're living dead.

Topps' new line of cards take everyone's favorite and not so favorite red carpet walker and transforms them into walking dead versions that would make The Garbage Pale Kids proud! I was lucky enough to pick up a couple packs and I can say these cards are great for a laugh (if you have a twisted sense of humor.)

Well I guess that's it for now but remeber keep your friends close and your enemies in a six foot hole!

    Blood and Char-kol
    Greetings and Garden Gnomes,

I'd just like to start by saying thanks to a few good folks for being around when I need fiends. ( At risk of forgetting someone, allow me to say you know who you are.)

On that note I needs to be said that it seems the more things change the more they suck. Let me explain... I have returned to VU for a few classes only to have a loans suspened. While the stigma of the starving artist sounds edgey and cool in the real world it is no fun at all. I understand suffering for my art but at some point I am just tired of the game.

Don't get me wrong I'm not just here to bitch about the unfair hand life is dealing me. I have some really great friends and chances to further my career in publishing, but I am venting to anyone who still reads this. Sometimes I just need to get it out and clear my head so I can focus on my goals and tasks at hand.I tend to get a little stressed when dealing with VU and real life at the same time. There just isn't enough hours in the day some days.

I really hope all this money bullshit gets worked out because I have signed up for two art classes and I had forgotten how amazing it is to get your hands dirty and dive into an art project. (thus blood and char-kol)

    So, yeah....There is that.

In other news (of a good nature) I have finally started on my short story for the APEX Halloween Horror Contest.  I hope to have it finished long before the deadline so that I may start work on my story for FE. I would encourage any of my friends looking for more publishing credits to embark on both or at least one of these great chances.

...and that pretty much wraps it up for me at this point, so until next time...

Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for your gun!

GenCon & Irish car bombs (as seen on myspace.com/jtravisgrundon)
Well this year I spent very little time at the con itself. I did do everything I set out to do and find everything I wanted. Despite my lack of time in Indy i would say this was my favorite GenCon of the two I've been to. (Thanks in part to the company I had.)

It was nice to see the guys from Continuum again this year and be able to touch base with Charles Erdman, but the best contact I made was with a group called Fantasist Enterprises.

FE is a great looking publishing company dealing in not only novels and anthologies but comic books as well. At the present time they are looking for tales influenced by Asian folklore, no later than the 1800's. This is for a collecton of short stories due out some time in 2008. While this is not my usual direction i have been brainstorming on a great idea I plan to sumbit for the anthology.

I had looked at this company's website before heading to Indy so I was on the lookout for them and I was happy to finally find them and be able to talk with  Writer/editor Christina Callabro. Christina was even nice enough to sign the copy of FE's Modern Magic, I picked up to get a feel for the standard set for me.

So far I am really loving the book and Christina's story was nothing short of chillingly amazing. Over all I am very stoked about the chance to submit to FE and I would ask any of my friends, who are like minded, to submit as well. In my eyes this is a good company on the way up.

After meeting and talking with FE I found my way to Indy's  Claddagh Irish Pub.
Believe me this is an experience I will not soon forget. It was great to walk into a pub where my favorite drink (Guinness) is the house favorite. After a couple draughts I had the pleasure of trying Guinness in a way I never had before...in an Irish car bomb!

Now before everyone thinks I've gone all terrorist, let me explain. An Irish car bomb is a half a pint of Guinness with a shot of Jameson Irish Whiskey and Bailey's Irish Cream floating on the shot. The way to drink it is to drop the shot into the glass and slam it back as fast as you can before it curddles. I know it sounds like a lot of work but it's worth it for a great tasting time that hit like you want it to.

Well I guess that's just about all for me...but before I go I want to say Congrats to my long lost friend B. B. Walter on Sister Light, Book One: Of  Shadows. I have known this young lady for a long time and I am happy to see that her book is published and I wish her all the success in the world.

Thanks for checking this out and be safe.

    Live Journal
As it turns out I have nothing to say on a live journal, I have given thought to posting my weekly column I write for the Vincennes University Trailblazer, but it is about being a parent and going to school. I don't feel that this is my forum for that. I 'm pretty sure that this will be my last update. I do however have a myspace that I don't place a blog on, but it is a way to contact me......thanks to all my friends on livejournal......see ya around.

Good Friends and a Bottle of Water
This past Saturday I attended a birthday get together for my friend Justin (for more on Justin see http://www.blurty.com/users/anubis1999 ) it had been since my birthday since I had seen him and even longer since I had seen other guest at the party. Some of the guest I had not seen since I graduated high school in 1998. When everyone arrived to Justin’s house is was great. Everything clicked like I had been hanging out with them since high school ended. I was inviting and a lot of fun. Another thing that I found great about the whole experience was that Colby (a friend who is like my brother) drove me there because my car is a bastard and because he and Justin had met at my house a few times and really gotten along. Not very many people knew Colby at the party, but to walk in and see the level of interaction and conversation you would not have guessed it, and that is cool. I look forward to going back to Albion to hang out with them again soon.

Speaking of friends my friend Zac has decided he will be writing a book Dynamic Body Magick. (For more info check out his journal http://www.livejournal.com/users/zac_walters/) I wish him the best of luck and look forward to seeing the finished product.

It is hard to find good friends and when you do it is hard to keep a close relationship after you are married and have a child. I am fortunate to have found a small list of good friends that I can enjoy talking to even if it has been forever and a day. While only 2 of these friends appear on this site I assure you the other are just as interesting and as good of friends as a person could ask for.

Wok in Progress: I am currently still working for the VU Trailblazer, despite a week off to clear my head of all the chaos and back stabbing that goes on in the journalism lab. (See future post for more details.)

I am also finished with the outline and character concepts for a collection of intertwining stories about “life after baby”. This will be written from an adult perspective, much like Sex and the City, on how a baby changes your goals, sex life, money, decisions, and so on. I am really excited to start this project. I think it is something a lot of people will enjoy. Sample will be posted as they are finished.

What else am I doing? I just started reading Queen of the Slayers, the novel that picks up right after the last episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I am also playing Call of Cthulhu for XBOX (thanks Jason) and so far after a couple hours I love it. Stay tuned for a full review.

In Lilyana news: Lily is just fine though she is very upset that Halloween is over. She loved to go to Wal-Mart and look at the Halloween stuff.

    New Concept or Creepy?
Finally, here is my second journal entry. For those who know me, you know I have every intention of using this as a platform to let people read my writing, but there is something that must be said.
It is not a big secret my mother and I have never seen eye to eye due to her giving up custody of me at 9, her being married 11 or 12 times (no joke), or even her just never being there like a mother should.
As of 2 days ago my mom told me she had left her husband, but she had found someone that made her feel good about herself. After some talking I got the guys name (Devon), where he is from (Robinson, IL.), and his age…………22!
Just for the record I am 25 years old, for those who don’t know. I find this a little creepy and gross. The worst part of it all is that she says he reminds her of me, but I can’t help but feel that it isn’t really a big deal. Maybe I’m just overreacting like I do from time to time?
